The good news is that some gum disease can be reversed, especially if you start working on it right away. Here is what you should know about reversing gum disease.
What You Can Do
Although you will definitely need us to do our part (more on that later) there are a few things that you can do at home to help reverse gum disease. The first and most important thing is to immediately being a regular regimen of oral hygiene.
You should brush your teeth very well at least twice a day, making sure to brush in a circular motion and getting all the spots, especially toward the back of your mouth. Plus, you really do need to floss every day. These two things alone will go a long way towards turning back gum disease.
Keep your toothbrush in good shape. Once it starts to wear out, promptly replace it. You need a good toothbrush to ensure that it is scrubbing your teeth each time you use it.
You can also make sure that you have plenty of fluids circulating in your mouth. If you are taking medication that dries up your saliva, carry a bottle of water with you and keep sipping all day long.
What Your Dentist Can Do
We can do our part by cleaning your teeth below the gum line, where you can't get with your toothbrush. You may have developed tartar or other deposits on your teeth and we can remove the deposits through planing and scaling. We can also help to educate you on proper cleaning technique, and we can recommend other things-such as a good electric toothbrush-that can help.
Please contact our office if you have any questions about gum disease.
