What is a Dental Crown Lengthening Procedure?

Posted on 8/13/2016 by Leslie Davis
An elderly woman about to receive a crown lengthening procedure. If you are considering a restorative or cosmetic procedure, crown lengthening may have been recommended to you. Depending on your individual treatment plan, crown lengthening might be the only procedure you need, or it might be the first step in preparing to improve your smile.

What is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening exposes more of the natural tooth so that it is above your gum line. During the procedure, you will receive local anesthesia on the area where tissue will be removed. This usually is the only anesthesia necessary for crown lengthening, but if you are nervous, ask us about sedations options for the procedure.

Next, small amounts of gum tissue are removed. Bone tissue may need to be removed as well, but not all crown lengthening procedures require removing bone tissue. The amount of gum and bone tissue removed depends on if any restorative work is being done in the future.

Finally, the gums are stitched together and given time to heal. Your gums and bone tissue need enough time to heal before any other cosmetic or restorative procedures can be done.

Why Might You Need This Procedure?

If you have severe tooth decay below gum line, you may need crown lengthening in order for the decay to be treated or to prepare for restoration. Certain procedures - like dental crowns - need to have enough natural tooth exposed for the new crown to be attached.

Crown lengthening also can be used as a cosmetic procedure. It can done to one tooth in order to even out your gum line, or it can be done to multiple teeth for people with "gummy smiles."
