Laser Treatment Can Improve Discolored Gums

Posted on 6/25/2016 by Leslie Davis
A close up of a dental laser used to restore patients smiles.Have you noticed that your gums are starting to look different? Perhaps they appear brown or suddenly have dark spots on them?

There are a variety of causes to these discolored gums, and fortunately, laser treatment can efficiently and painlessly correct these issues.

What Causes Discolored Gums?

If your gums have dark spots or other discolored patches, there are a variety of factors that may be at play:

•  Genetics. In many cases, genetics are the cause of spotty gums. People with dark skin have more pigmentation and will naturally have darker gums, but the pigmentation can become darker is certain areas. Laser gum therapy can be used to lighten or remove these spots.
•  Fillings. Silver fillings can cause darkening of the gums if a small amount of silver is able to creep beneath the soft tissue. The result could be a dark or blue color in the gums, but laser treatment can remove them quickly and easily.
•  Prescription drugs. Certain medications are known to cause discoloration of the gums, including certain antidepressants and antibiotics. In many cases, the dark colorations will fade after the medication is discontinued, but if they don't, laser gum surgery may be able to help.
•  Tobacco use. Smoking is the cause of so many problems in the mouth, so it should come as no surprise that it could be behind the discolored gums that you are experiencing. Dark brown spots may occur on your gums, and laser gum treatment can remove them. However, they'll only continue to come back if you don't make a long-term change and quit smoking.

Spotty gums can make healthy gums appear unhealthy. When you smile, you will show off your teeth and gums to the world, and discolorations can make you feel self-conscious.
